The association Haus des Wandels e.V. (HdW) bought the empty vocational school with boarding school in 2018 and has since breathed new life into the huge building. Volunteer village initiatives such as a pottery studio, sewing group and library have found a place there, as have exhibitions with international artists. The operators are thus developing a cultural quarter that operates beyond the urban-rural distinction.
The house is a space for action and negotiation, art and learning. The project group works practically, in radical self-care, and sees itself as integrated into ecological and social cycles. Feminist relations, utopian hospitality, intersectional analyses, transformative actions, artistic strategies, structurally sustainable infrastructures and anti-authoritarian forms of organization are the foundations of their practice.
As part of diverse initiatives such as "Dörfer gegen Rechts ("Villages against the Right") or the "Bündnis Weltoffenes Steinhöfel", the HdW actively participates in the discussion and implementation of a democratic and solidary coexistence in the community of Steinhöfel, which has committed itself to cosmopolitanism with a declaration.
