EXHIBITION OPENING
ON SATURDAY THE 03.02.2024
from 15:00-18:00 UHR
OPEN: 04 - 10 FEBRUARY 2024 FROM 15:00 - 18:00. Free admission
What do you take with you when you only have a few minutes to pack your things, and the trains are so crowded that even a little seems too much? The exhibition "What Really Matters" explores the question of what people who escape from war take with them, what they leave behind and miss painfully, and how the items brought along change their meaning before, during and after their forced migration to Germany. For example, matches and a tin of tuna can seem vital during the escape, while regaining their everyday significance at the destination. Other items, such as a small worry doll or a Valentine's card, become later even more dear to the heart.
In her photographs, Anastasia Koehler portrays 17 Ukrainians along with the items they took with them. The people had to flee to Germany due to the Russian war of aggression. Together with Svitlana Bozhko, the escape stories of the portrayed individuals were recorded, along with the significance of the items they brought with them. Anyone who takes a look at the interviews reads about fear and loss but also about tremendous willpower and hope.
